Spring semester is the busiest time of year. On top of the regular academic schedule, the boys are busy with SAT & ACT test prep, studying for AP finals (which take place in May, not June).
It is also swim season, with competitions at various high schools each week, league finals and CIF. Swimming 6000 yards before breakfast is not unusual. And there is the annual Spring Break rite of passage. No, I'm not talking about an extended trip to a sunny beach in Florida, Texas, Mexico or elsewhere. At Newport Harbor, Spring Break means it is time for the 100X100's. Each athlete will swim 100 yards, 100 times in a day. It is a grueling test of endurance. But it is a test that all complete with the help and encouragement of teammates, coaches and parents.
Now, with all this going on, you'd think water polo would take a back seat. Not a chance. Water polo training continues through the week with the addition of night league - practices from 8-10pm. And to keep the competitive edge sharp, the boys are once again participating in the IRONMAN League.
Complete IRONMAN photo coverage of the action can be found at the Newport Harbor Aquatics Fotki site.
